The present study proposed a predictive technology for seat hugging feels using sitting body pressure on virtual environment. To develop a seat hugging feel prediction system, a five-step ergonomic research was conducted: S1. feasibility study, S2. hugging quantification, S3. hugging experiment, S4. hugging analysis,
and S5. hugging evaluation system development. Pressure appearance ratio (PAE) and pressure appearance unevenness (PAUE) of mid-back and side were found significant (adj. R2 = 73%) on seat hugging feels. A statistical equation for quantifying hugging feels was developed and embedded into a seat emotion prediction system. The proposed system can contribute to efficient and quantitative seat development.

In keeping with their lightweighting philosophy, Gordon Murray Design have applied their iStream® technology to lightweight automotive seating. As part of an Innovate UK programme, Gordon Murray Design have designed, built and tested a 4-way adjustable seat that weighs in at less than 12kg. This has been achieved through the use of composite materials in the seat base and back elements, and a reduction in the number of components required for manufacture. Combined with a low cost tooling route, the technology allows for bespoke seat designs in low to high volumes at costs comparable to conventional seats.
The company is already looking to transfer the technology into the rail, mass transport and aerospace sectors.
